Day 1 on Iceland

This day began around 4am as I awoke and saw that my plane to Iceland was passing nearby Greenland. Three hours later we touched down and I added a new country to my list.

Reykavik International Airport is about 40 miles from the city itself.

After enjoying an Icelandic capucinno, getting Icelandic kronas at the ATM, and picking up our rental car, we took the scenic route to Reykavik. For several hours we drove along the peninsula experiencing and enjoying Icelandic sights.

Scenic fishing villages with birds too numerous in variety and numbers to mention. An Eider duck breeding sanctuary where hundreds sat on nests.

We passed Icelandic sheep (known by knitters for their wool), and Icelandic horses which are small and stocky, with heavy coats.

We stopped in the rain to walk a small bridge that spans a sand-filled gulf between the North American and European Continental Plates.

A most extraordinary sight followed: the geothermal field at Austurenglar.
