Day 4 on Iceland

Today was leisurely in getting going. Amazing breakfast spread.

I was really good at making waffles!

First stop after breakfast was a walk across and alongside fields of sheep, then on to Systrafoss waterfall. There are so many sheep, most with twin lambs.

We picked up some provisions at a local grocery store for snacking and picnicking through the day.

First up - another waterfall, Foss a Siou.

Across the road were Dverghamrar, "Dwarf Rocks", where we walked alongside basalt columns.  And I high-pointed the mound above.

And still another waterfall.

We drove east on the Route 1, also known as the "Ring Road - because it encircles the perimeter of Iceland.  For miles we drove alongside Skeioararsandur, a desolate sandbar formed from alluvial deposits. Some years ago a volcano eruption caused a glacier flood, with tons of glaciers forced down river, destroying a number of roadway bridges. Pieces of one such bridge rest on the sandbar.

The main attraction of the day was Vatnajokull glacier, the largest ice cap in Iceland. It covers 8% of the country.

We walked 3 miles round trip to the edge of the glacier.

It was exhausting!

On down the road we came to the Jokulsarlon lagoon where calved ice bergs float on to the sea.

Home for a lovely dinner. Now turning in. Still bright outside. Weird.
Snow is forecast for tomorrow. Stay tuned.
