Preparation

Ferð means journey in Icelandic.

I can't say for sure why I've wanted to journey to Iceland for so long.  The images of vast expanses with small towns and villages appeal to me. The sense of rural and rugged beauty tugs at me.  Come visit.  Come see.  Come experience.

And so I shall.  In six days my flight will carry me to JFK and on to Reykavik, landing the following morning.  I wonder how it will feel to look down as the plane descends and then lands on - or in - Iceland.  I'm eager to find out. Until I can take my own landing photo, this one will do.

I've been preparing for this trip for almost a year, beginning with the purchase of airline tickets for the flight. My best travelling friend and I were gifted with First Class seating. Imagine.

I have a number of guidebooks--both on my Kindle, and actual books.  I've highlighted more than it will be possible to see and do.  Of course.

Lodging arrangements were made six months ago, hoping the planned itinerary of two or three nights in each stop would adequately cover both distance and interests.  We shall see. Car rental is in place with the expectation that since Icelanders drive on the right, I'll be able to manage a manual transmission; this is a "cost-saving" measure.  Anticipation of high prices is HIGH.

While good preparation helps ensure good travel outcome, there is also joy in the anticipation that is found in the midst of preparing. Joy of expectation as well. There's also the sense that being intentional about preparing for the somewhat unknown, as Iceland travel surely is, will make this ferð both safe and extraordinary.

So as my day of departure draws near, I'm intent upon seeing that all preparations necessary for good travel are made.
